5″ Vintage Handmade Sterling Mounted Western Curb Bit

$170.00

This is an incredible, truly vintage bit. Came from a life-long collector’s personal collection and comes pieces of a story (or lore). You know how it goes…he got it from someone, who bought it from someone else, who traded it for a horse back in the day. However, given the age and the stories, this one is an OLD bit, possibly turn of the century. Made in or near Duncan, AZ on a ranch by one of the ranch hands who worked closely with or was trained by Vaquero riders. This one is very much in an old, Vaquero style with the raised edge that goes down the shank. Is a solid iron bit that was clearly hand forged. Slightly larger mouth at 5 3/8″ with a straight bar mouth, with a rounded port that measures 2 1/2″. It does not appear a cricket or roller was ever mounted in the port. Loose jaw style shanks that have some movement but don’t rotate completely with a thinner, swept back shank that measures 9 3/8″ long. On each side of the shank is a sterling silver concho with cool engraving work. The stamping on the outside of the concho appears to be made with a leather stamp, which is honestly really cool! One of the conchos shows some cosmetic damage where some of the engraving is rubbed off to the point it is almost smooth along the edge. Has a small dent on that conchos as well. Despite this, this bit is in incredible condition. Clearly maintained well. Still have a brilliant balance, feel, and weight. Still more than appropriate to use or add to your collection.
