If you ask Cliff Langerud, he’ll say he’s retired. But, he also says “when you’re a plumber…or a saddle builder….you’re only retired once your in the ground”. So…clearly…retirement is going really well for Cliff, haha! He bought and refurbished an old sewing machine and is “kinda sorta” building saddle or two to keep busy. These new saddles from Cliff are getting hard to find. He isn’t taking orders and only builds two or three a year. Well, this one is his newest ‘retirement’ saddle. He’s listened to us talk about “Ultra-Lite” Wade saddles and this is his play on that.
This awesome saddle is truly built to work and hold up to anything you’ll throw its way, while not being so heavy. Designed to be a stripped down Wade (Ultra-Light)-cutting down on weight without compromising durability. On reinforced, bullhide wrapped Cliff Wade tree (Hadlock & Fox Tree ), on QH bars. Wider fitting that measures 7″, with 6″ gullet height. Offers ample shoulder flare and rock through the bars. This one will fit a horse well. Reinforced, Post horn that measures 3″ x 2.5″ that is mule wrapped, sure to hold up to plenty of hard work. Cliff built this one with overall weight in mind. Shorter, 27″ single skirt that is rounded and tapers up under the fender for a close contact feel, in-skirt rigged, and reduced bulk to the fenders. Built with a mix of Hermann Oak leather (rough out leather) and Wicket & Craig bridle leather. While Cliff built this one as light as possible, he still built it for work. Rear of the tree is laced into the skirts, skirts all double stitched, and rigging is reinforced. Has real wool shearling underside. Roughed out seat, jockeys, and fenders, 3″ cantle and slightly raised twist ensures this one is grippy and secure. Comes fully rigged and is finished off with a nice, weighted aluminum roper stirrup. Fenders offer plenty of adjustment. Weighs in at 31lbs with current tack/rigging. While its more simple in its look, this is a darn nice saddle, built to work but is darn comfy and is still a great option for a trail rider. One of these days, sadly, we really will be offering the very last one built by Cliff. This saddle is one that will last for generations and doesn’t break the bank.
